- Exercise 1: Ditch the Details
Paint only with one large brush exercising all of the options of that brush. Try a flat: Good for boxy shapes, broad washes and lines (on edge). - Exercise 2: Dwell on the Negative
Set up a still life and paint only the air (negative shapes) around the objects. - Exercise 3: Built for Speed
Get 4 pictures and paint all 4 them in 20 minutes. Quick sketching builds painterly qualities and forces you to forget about small shapes. Consider the use of counterchange in at least one image. - Exercise 4: Value Patterns in Black
Set up a still life and light it from one side. With a brush and India ink indicate value patterns in solid black. If you are feeling uneasy do a simple (SIMPLE) line drawing but focus on white and black only. - Post-class Resources/Videos:
